Summary
AECOM is in search of a highly motivated and enthusiastic language expert to build a machine translation lexicon to assist in the automated translation of Shona, Twi, Yoruba, or Bambara into English. All software and the machine translation system will be provided.
Primary
Responsibilities:
o Create and enhance machine translation capabilities by extensive lexicographic work in the source language
o Codify inflectional morphology of the source language by writing succinct grammar rules for the machine translation program
o Manage time and resources effectively in order to meet pre-determined milestones
Skills used on the job will include:
o Lexicography for machine translation
o Translation
o Morphological analysis and description
o Corpus acquisition
o Bilingual interpretation/multilingual analysis
o Status/metrics reporting
o Project planning and tracking
o Engagement with academia for resources as needed
Minimum Requirements
o Native or near-native proficiency in Shona, Twi, Yoruba, and/or Bambara
o Strong command of written English
o Desire to learn new tools and adapt to new technology
Applicants will need to take a short test to measure linguistic aptitude for the task.
Preferred Qualifications
o Knowledge of scripting language, such as Perl
o Degree in computational linguistics or linguistics
o Experience with translation and/or interpretationEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
